SHU Offers New Majors for Fall 2020 Semester

Exercise science, Cybersecurity and Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture will all be offered as new majors beginning with the fall 2020 semester on Siena Heights University’s Adrian campus. These new majors address emerging new trends and developments in the workforce. Here is a brief rundown of each new major:

Exercise Science

Exercise science is for students who are interested in pursuing careers in athletic and fitness training, rehabilitation, physical therapy, occupational therapy and medical professions such as as physician assistant and medical school. It will teach knowledge of human movement and performance in careers that involve the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of disease and disability, the general enhancement of health and fitness and the improvement of sport performance through training and conditioning. It will be offered in three concentrations:

•   Human Performance and Fitness
•   Pre-rehabilitation
•   Pre-medical Professions

Cybersecurity

The Cybersecurity program will replace the Computer Information Systems major. It will provide students the ability to train on state-of-the-art technology and prepare them for industry-leading certifications in CCNA Cyber-Ops, Security+, Network+ and Linux+. The ultimate goal of the program is to become a designated Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense Education by the National Security Agency and Department of Homeland Security.

Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture

The Agroecology and Sustainable Agriculture major will include a teaching partnership with Michigan State University as well as the Adrian Dominican Sisters’ Permaculture Program. Agriculture is Michigan’s second largest industry, and Ohio’s largest. The program will prepare students for careers in agriculture-related fields, including food production, nutrition, food chemistry, biomaterials, biofuels, plant science, water management, forestry and agriculture technology. Graduates completing in this major will be able to address current environmental challenges needed to build sustainable food systems, regenerative soils and renewable energy supplies to safeguard natural resources.
